The element encompasses the knowledge, skills, traditions and practices that communities across the Arab region have built up around the tree over centuries: cultivation practices, the traditional crafts that use palm leaves and fibres, and the social rituals, poetry and songs associated with it. Date palms have supported civilisations in the region for centuries, serving as a source of nutrition and enabling associated crafts and professions. This is one of the largest multinational inscriptions in the Arab world. It was first inscribed on the Representative List in 2019 by fourteen countries, and extended in 2022, when Qatar joined, bringing the total to fifteen submitting States.
