It has been practised for over 4,000 years. Originally a subsistence activity, a way of obtaining food, it has evolved into a social and recreational practice and a way of connecting with nature. Modern falconry places strong emphasis on conservation: of the falcons themselves, of the quarry and habitats, and of the practice. Practitioners across many countries share universal values, traditions and practices, including the methods of breeding, training and caring for the birds, the equipment used, and the bonds formed between the falconer and the bird. Falconry is one of UNESCO's largest multinational inscriptions, shared by 24 countries including the United Arab Emirates.
