Riders believe the chanting entertains them and stimulates the camels to walk in time. The verses are short and improvised, typically seven lines or fewer, and are often performed antiphonally, with one group of riders answering another. Al-Taghrooda is also chanted around campfires, at weddings and at tribal and national festivities, particularly camel races, and women take part in work-related contexts. Beyond entertainment it carries real social weight: poets use it to send messages to loved ones, relatives, friends or tribal chiefs, to comment on social issues, and to help settle disputes between individuals or tribes. The poetry preserves records of historical achievements alongside contemporary themes.
